About the Cover Art

If you are wondering the podcast’s cover art…

This was the emblem for the USAAF’s First Motion Picture Unit during the war. In researching whether I could use it I learned about the INSTITUTE OF HERALDRY, the U.S. Government agency in charge of emblems and coats of arms for the military and other agencies.

From its website…

The Institute of Heraldry has a long and distinguished record of support to the United States Army. Its roots were firmly planted in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson directed the creation of the Heraldic Program Office under the War Department General Staff. Its purpose was to take responsibility for the coordination and approval of coats of arms and other insignia for Army organizations. By the end of World War II, its role expanded to include the other military services. The Institute’s wide range of heraldic services include decorations, flags, streamers, agency seals, coats of arms, badges, and other forms of official emblems and insignia.

Who would have thought?

(According to Wikipedia, the emblem is in the public domain, but use for “commercial purposes” requires permission from The Institute of Heraldry. I emailed them, but never heard back.)

In homage to Looney Tunes, I placed the emblem inside concentric red circles and used a Looney-like font.

For wide-format needs, I placed it inside a film banner reminiscent of the one in the MGM Lion logo.
